Chantix ® Information

CHANTIX (also known as Champix) is a nicotine-free pill that works in the brain to block the pleasurable effects of smoking, which in turn helps to decrease your need and desire to smoke. CHANTIX is a prescription medicine available from your health care professional for smokers 18 and older.

USES: This medication is used to help you quit smoking.

CHANTIX helps your body get ready and resist the urge to smoke. Plan a quit date to stop smoking before taking CHANTIX. Start taking 1 tablet a day one week before your quit date. After your first week, CHANTIX is designed to be taken twice a day for 12 weeks. When you have reached your quit date, stop smoking and continue to take CHANTIX as recommended by your healthcare professional.

HOW TO USE

Take this medication with a full glass of water after a main meal.
Week 1

  • Take as directed. Inside the green starter pack, there is a row of white tablets. Start by taking one white tablet each morning for three days, as indicated. It is advised to keep smoking for this first week while taking Chantix.
  • On the fourth day, start taking two white tablets a day. One in the morning and one at night with a full glass of water after a main meal.
  • You should finish the starter pack by the end of the first week. The following day will be your quit smoking date
Weeks 2 - 12
  • On your quit smoking date, try to stop smoking completely. Start taking the blue continuing week pack, which contains blue tablets.
  • Over the next 12 weeks take two tablets a day. One in the morning and one at night with a full glass of water after a main meal.
If your prescription came in a bottle, please follow the dosing instructions given to you by your doctor.

SIDE EFFECTS

With all medications, you may experience some side effects.
You may experience minor or no side effects when using Chantix. Please check with your doctor if any side effects become present or persistent.

Most Common Side Effects:

  • Nausea
  • Sleep Disturbance (trouble sleeping or changes in dreaming)
  • Constipation
  • Gas
  • Vomiting
  • Headaches
  • Increased Appetite
  • Stomach Upset
Severe Side Effects
Please seek medical attention straight away if any of these side effects occur:
  • Severe allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching difficulty breathing, tightness in chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips or tongue)
  • Chest Pain
  • Fast, Slow or irregular heartbeat
  • Memory loss
  • Seizures
  • Vision Changes
  • Suicidal Thoughts
  • Severe or Persistent Nausea
  • Unusual Mood Changes
If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

WHAT YOU SHOULD TELL YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE TAKING CHANTIX:

Tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions including:

  • If you have kidney problems or get kidney dialysis.
  • If you are pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant.
    Chantix has not been studied in pregnant women and is not known if it will harm your unborn baby.
  • If you are breastfeeding. Chantix may pass into breast milk, although this has not been confirmed or studied.
  • If you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances.
  • If you are taking any prescription/nonprescription, herbal or dietary medications.

Tell your doctor about the medications you currently take including:

  • Insulin
  • Blood Thinners e.g. Warfarin
  • Asthma Medications
  • Nicotine replacement therapy
There may be other drugs that are not listed above that can affect Chantix. Inform your doctor about all the prescription and nonprescription medications you take. This includes everything from vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and medications prescribed by other doctors. Before starting any new medication while taking Chantix, discuss with your doctor before taking.

MISSED DOSE

Take any missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is close to the time of your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose.

OVERDOSE

If an overdose is suspected, seek emergency medical attention immediately. Symptoms of a Chantix overdose are unknown.

KEEP IT UP

If you slip up and smoke while taking Chantix, it's okay - don't give up. Keep trying to quit and do no stop taking Chantix. It may take some people a few extra weeks for it to work best.

STORAGE

Store Chantix at room temperature and keep away from moisture and sunlight. Do not store in the bathroom. KEEP THIS AND ALL MEDICATIONS OUT OF THE REACH OF CHILDREN.
